Strong-Oak|This book was a joy to my entire family. It is an absolute asset to anyone trying to find an Indian link in their family history. It also discusses the prejudice that Indians in SC went through until very recently. In a way, we still face prejudice because there is still that stigma of possibly having mixed with African Americans.
Harsh "racial" segregation during the Jim Crow era prevented South Carolina's Indian groups from assimilating. Due to their three-fold genetic admixture, they were labeled with such fanciful names as Red Bones, Brass Ankles, Croatans, Turks, and "not real Indians" at all.
